Kathy Wolfskill 2008 C Street Prepared Ladies Solo National Champion

by Scott Hearne on February 3, 2009

Calling Nederland, Colorado home Kathy Wolfskill is a long-time Solo Competitor. It appears that she has an affinity to rear wheel drive cars. She drove the Tom Kubo owned 1991 Mazda Miata on Hoosier tires to the 2008 C Street Prepared Ladies Championship.

RR: Is this your first attendance at Nationals?
KW: Nope, this was my 12th.

RR: Is this your first National Championship?
KW: No, I have two other Championships driving David Fauth’s 1995 BMW 325is in D Street Prepared Ladies.

RR: What was your favorite memory of the competition?
KW: It had to do with a first-time junior from our region attending (for the first time, obviously). Her parents were out of the county, so the whole region rallied around her to get a new motor running in her kart and get it out there and support her. More work needed to be done to finish it, and sooo many people from around the country we didn’t even know pitched in to help in so many ways. It was an amazing display of generosity of time, effort, and expertise. Autocrossers everywhere are extra special people!

RR: What do you think was your key to success?
KW: Without a doubt this year was having a super well-prepared car by Tom Kubo & Scott Fraser.

RR: Who has most influenced you?
KW: My brothers – Geoff & Matt Leicester started autocrossing around 1978 and taught me most of what I know. They’ve always been supportive and encouraging and positive and just plain fun!

RR: Who inspires you?
KW: Bob & Patty Tunnell – not only are they awesome drivers, they’re caring, ethical, hyper-supporters and promoters of the sport.

RR: Do you have any special pre-race routine, or any superstitions you follow?
KW: I ask my higher self and any friendly powers-that-be out there to feel free to help me with clarity and inspiration.

RR: Do you have any driving aids or tools you use to help you?
KW: This year Tom installed a video camera that’s great especially when the guys run first!

RR: What do you think you do differently than your competition?
KW: I have no idea – but I’d love to know what they do differently ?
RR: Have you attended any driving school?
KW: Negatory.

RR: Describe your driving style.
KW: Smooth (most times a little too), overly late-apexy.

RR: What was your first –and favorite autocross car?
KW: First was my ’77 Fiat X1/9, and my favorite was a friend’s 240Z. It’s SOUNDED so FAST it inspired me to GO fast.

RR: If you could change one Solo rule – either for your specific class or in general — what would it be?
KW: Anything that put the car I was driving as the overdog of the class!!

RR: Who would you like to thank for your success?
KW: I’m deeply grateful to Tom Kubo for providing such an amazing opportunity and car (he’s so much fun and he pays for everything but entry fees and travel expenses), Scott Fraser for being a phenomenal setup expert and encourager, my brothers Geoff & Matt for years of their expertise, David Fauth for elevating my thinking to a national-level consciousness, and the whole Rocky Mountain Solo autocross gang for the not-to-be-believed competition and professional-but-amazingly entertaining program!
