Greg McCance 2008 STX Solo Champion

by Scott Hearne on January 29, 2009

Hailing from the greater Toledo, Ohio area our 2008 STX Solo National Champion is a dual region member of the Northwestern Ohio Region SCCA and the Detroit Region SCCA. He ably piloted his 2002 Subaru WRX on Dunlop Direzza tires over always stiff competition to the number one spot.

RR: Is this your first attendance at Nationals?
GM: No, this was my third time attending Nationals.

RR: Is this your first National Championship?
GM: Yes.

RR: What was your favorite memory of the competition?
GM: Sweating it as my Co-driver (Billy Brooks) took his last run. I had left the door open and luckily, for me, he didn’t step through. That was a tense 40 sec. I was rooting for you though, mate.

RR: What do you think was your key to success?
GM: Finding the best competitors to drive against or with.

RR: Who has most influenced you?
GM: My Father.

RR: Who inspires you?
GM: My Wife.

RR: Do you have any special pre-race routine, or any superstitions you follow?
GM: Not really.

RR: Do you have any driving aids or tools you use to help you?
GM: Not really, my car’s AWD; it drives itself.

RR: What do you think you do differently than your competition?
GM: I wear ugly plaid shorts. I believe it (wearing the shorts) has a psychological affect on my competition. I know they can’t stop thinking about just how ugly they are!

RR: Have you attended any driving school?
GM: I took the Evolution School both Phase 1 and Phase 2.

RR: Describe your driving style.
GM: Loosey-goosey. Is that one word?( No. Ed.). I like a car that has a tendency to spin on the way to the start line, then I just use ‘quiet’ hands from there.

RR: What was your first –and favorite autocross car?
GM: Subaru-Subaru.

RR: If you could change one Solo rule – either for your specific class or in general — what would it be?
GM: If you must work course for G Prepared’s heat all workers will be given chaise lounges, umbrellas, and fruity little drinks. You’re going be out there a while!

RR: Who would you like to thank for your success?
GM: Anyone and everyone who has ever taken the time to walk the course with me or shared their knowledge. I like to win, we all do, but more than that I enjoy the off course moments of interacting and getting to know the great people that make up the solo community.
