I'll update with pics as I can.

What I'm doing:
Pulling engine
Degreasing engine/tranny/engine bay
Stripping engine to shortblock and replacing oil pan, oil pump, pump shaft, timing chain and gears.
Replacing rear main seal, clutch, throwout bearing, etc.
Adding Explorer intake, GT40 heads, FMS 1.6 roller rockers, 65mm TB and EGR
Painting valve covers, front cover, block and heads (maybe all accessories).

Converting to rear disk brakes, adding SN95 MC, sn95 axles, etc.

It's a lot of work, but I hope to get it all done in a decent amount of time.

“started” today with the exhaust removal. For not driving in the salt/ice, etc I have a lot of rust on the bolts. I started without using wd40 and got one nut off. Right now I'm stuck removing the O2 sensors. Those things are in there.

I hate rusty crap.

Ambitious project! A good penetrating oil will probably work better than the WD40. Soak everything good and then walk away for a little while.

Real progress today. Maybe my cleaning isn't going to be too bad on the engine bay.

Yeah, now the fun stuff begins. Dissasembly, cleaning, painting, etc. Then to the brakes, then re-install everything and cross the fingers.

You forgot to add  ”bore the cylinders, install the hi compression pistons, P&P the heads, and then reassemble the motor with the bigass cam”……!!!!!

Well, for as far into the engine as I'll be going, my Dad told me I may as well get new rings and bearings. This project has snowballed.

So I'll be freshening up my first engine soon. Yay, me. I'm actually pretty excited.

Pulled the heads off this afternoon and snapped some pics.

The bores have perfect cross-hatching on them, still. No ridge at the top of any cylinders.

I am >—–< this close to putting the new stuff on without pulling it all apart

Well, it has been a while since the last update. Nothing major has happened. I did pull the main and rod caps and saw that the bearings were pretty good–barely any wear at all. When I pulled the pan, the stock oil pan gasket was not in place, it was an replacement gasket. That fact suggest to me that something was done to the lower end be it a replacement of the oil pump or a full rebuild, who knows.

Anyway, I cleaned the block and head surfaces and laid the head gaskets in place. I still have to get out there and torque the heads down. Then I have to set the valvetrain (another first for me). Once I do that, I have to take my lower intake to the machine shop to get a boss drilled/tapped for a sensor or two.

In the meantime, I am preparing to pull the axles and putting the new ones in along with bolting up the backing plates and calipers/rotors. Then it is on to the engine bay. I bought some canned rustoleum to paint the engine bay–ghetto, but it will work.

No pics, but nothing good about the engine on a stand, lol.

I did pick up some gauges and a tach, though–just more work for me, I guess.

A little more, today. Pulled the axles and drums and installed the sn95 axles and rotors. I had more on the plan, but never happened.

Gear oil is awesome.

Ken, keep up the good work. I admire you for braving the cold! You do have some heat in that garage don't you?

Thanks Scott. As for heat, I got a deal on a 170k BTU torpedo heater. It heats my garage to 70 in about 2 minutes. I still have a lot to do to the car, but it is coming along. I have sticky notes everywhere.

Your Mustang looks exactly like my friends Mustang as it sits in his third garage parking spot. But he's dropping in a new motor instead of rebuilding.

well, this started as an oil pan replacement and ballooned to rebuild, gauges, rear brake setup, new top end, fuel system etc.

The old “Make a budget and double (triple) it” idea, y'know?

this car is still in pieces. I hope to drop the engine and tranny back in tomorrow and then finish up the brake install. I've been pretty lazy/busy lately.

Well, I got a few things done today.
I spent the day pulling my transmission, cleaning it up, then pushing the car out of the garage and putting the drivetrain back in.

I still have the little things to get hooked up and then get the brakes squared away and then I'll be ready to fire it up.
