With his surfer dude good looks Deric “Biff Frisch hails from Michigan and is a member of the Detroit Region SCCA although he still claims his roots in the Northwest Ohio Region. He started autocrossing in 1991 after crewing for a road race team in 1990. In the late 1990’s he autocrossed several different Dodge turbo cars. Taking a break from autocrossing in 2001 he began wheel to wheel racing in karts competing in the WKA (World Karting Association) National Road Race series from 2003 to 2007. Deric has found a home in autocrossing karts with the SCCA and has no reason to go back to ‘cars’. He competed this year in a 2002 Renspeed Honda (Alan Sheidlers chassis with a Mike McClintock motor) on Vega tires.
RR: Is this your first attendance at Nationals?
DF: No, 1994 was my first experience. I also ran in 1997, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
RR: Is this your first national championship?
DF: YES!
RR: What was your favorite memory of the competition?
DF: Staying dry!
RR: What do you think was your key to success?
DF: Teamwork! Talking with JT (JT McClintock who was my co-driver this year) and the other Team members helps significantly in a kart. The autocross course is so much wider in a kart that “the line can vary a lot! Things happen so fast that you need other feedback in order to land a perfect run. I am also sure spending 2 hours and $100 bucks at the indoor track days before Nationals helped as well!
RR: Who has most influenced you?
DF: Mike and JT McClintock.
RR: Who inspires you?
DF: Team Nut Pack (the McClintock ‘clan’ and other assorted hangers on).
RR: Do you have any special pre-race routine, or any superstitions you follow?
DF: I used to wear my lady luck shirt during competition (silhouette of a lady you usually see on trucker mud flaps) but dumped her since she never gave me a win at Nationals.
RR: Do you have any driving aids or tools you use to help you?
DF: A co driver!
RR: What do you think you do differently than your competition?
DF: Focus on my mistakes and not worry about everyone else’s times.
RR: Have you attended any driving school?
DF: Fast Company Spec Racer School at Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP) and Track Time NASCAR School at Michigan International Speedway (MIS).
RR: Describe your driving style.
DF: In a Kart…Smooth as possible, this would be the most erratic thing from a full size car.

RR: What was your first –and favorite autocross car?
DF: 1986 Shelby Charger.
RR: If you could change one Solo rule – either for your specific class or in general — what would it be?
DF: Nothing. Just more publicity with the masses. I think ProSolo should have a PINKS episode.
RR: Who would you like to thank for your success?
DF: Team Nut Pack! And the leader, Mike “The Nut McClintock.

Actually, the Renspeed chassis is from 1996, originally one of the SCCA-owned ones from the pilot program. I have had it since 2000. A great kart, now with three Nationals wins in a row! (At the hands of better pilots than myself, obviously
I’m proud to have helped in some significant way to get our Team members to the front of the class for the triple. Deric is a talented driver, and an all-around great guy, as are Mike and Jeremiah McClintock, and Keith Roberts; our own Nut Pack Racing group. Kudos from the “Senior Member” of the team.
Alan Sheidler
I really needed to mention that Alan Sheidler inspired me back in 2003 when he talked me into trying a shifter kart at a ProSolo. Thanks Alan!
