There must be something in the water around Milwaukee (is it the beer?) because there have been a fair number of Champions hailing from the Milwaukee Region SCCA. You can count among them Colin Fiedler who piloted his 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI on Bridgestone RE-01R tires to the 2008 STU Solo National Championship.
RR: Is this your first attendance at Nationals?
CF: No, this was my sixth time going to Nationals.
RR: Is this your first national championship?
CF: Yes.
RR: What was your favorite memory of the competition?
CF: Going out on my first run of day one and laying down a fast time and holding that lead through day one. My goal was the top 5, so it was a surprise to be leading after day one.
RR: What do you think was your key to success?
CF: Bridgestone helped me out a great deal; I wouldn’t have been at Nationals this year if it wasn’t for them. Most people in STU that I talked to couldn’t get the RE-01Rs to work for them, but they obviously are working very well for me.
RR: Who has most influenced you?
CF: I think my Dad, he has always been a car guy as well and I have been watching racing with him since I was very young.
RR: Who inspires you?
CF: I grew up watching Michael Schumacher, he was always someone I looked up to.
RR: Do you have any special pre-race routine, or any superstitions you follow?
CF: Just getting the car ready, I drive it on the street every day since it is my only car.

RR: Do you have any driving aids or tools you use to help you?
CF: I have a video camera, but I never watch the video between runs. I usually rely on my wife to tell me if it looks like I screwed up somewhere or if other people are going faster in sections. She has a very good eye for those kinds of things.
RR: What do you think you do differently than your competition?
CF: I guess I don’t know my competition well enough to know what I do differently.
RR: Have you attended any driving school?
CF: Just local autocross schools, no Evolution school or anything though.
RR: Describe your driving style.
CF: I am very good at adapting to different cars. I can hop into anything and figure it out very quickly.

RR: What was your first –and favorite autocross car?
CF: First autocross car was a 1990 Mazda Miata. Favorite one would have to be my Subaru, can’t argue with winning a championship in it!
RR: If you could change one Solo rule – either for your specific class or in general — what would it be?
CF: I have never agreed with the Stock class shock rule. I think it keeps many people from competing since they can’t afford high dollar shocks.
RR: Who would you like to thank for your success?
CF: Bridgestone for getting me to Nationals this year. Most of all my, wife for allowing me to go only a week after we were married!
