Brian Peters 2008 C Street Prepared Solo National Champion

by Scott Hearne on March 23, 2009

Not usually considered to be a hot bed of autocrossing Arizona is the home of 2008 C Street Prepared National Champion Brian Peters. In a class that has seen the Mazda Miata emerge as the car of choice Brian drove a third generation 2006 Mazda MX-5 (Miata) on Hoosier tires to his Championship win. Proving he is adaptable to new things as quickly as he is fast Brian only ran the Hoosier tires at the National Championship event having run all season on Kumho tires!

RR: Is this your first attendance at Nationals?
BP: Nope, this was my fifth trip.

RR: Is this your first National Championship?
BP: Yes, this was my first National Championship.

RR: What was your favorite memory of the competition?
BP: My last run of the event.  Heading from the grid to the start line, knowing that I was at the door step and all I had to do was focus and “drive through to the win.  Then the rush of everything coming together perfectly, justifying all those years of hard work.

RR: What do you think was your key to success?
BP: Fortunately, I was in a decent position following the first day and knew that I had to stay clean on the East course if I wanted to stay near the top.

RR: Who has most influenced you?
BP: Past National Champions.

RR: Who inspires you?
BP: My competition.  That’s what this sport is all about to me.

RR: Do you have any special pre-race routine, or any superstitions you follow?
BP: Lately I’ve been slamming a 24 oz Rockstar just before my run group.

RR: Do you have any driving aids or tools you use to help you?
BP: My co-driver and I have relied on a MaxQ Data MQGPS to maximize our performance.

RR: What do you think you do differently than your competition?
BP: I talk to myself before, during, and after runs.

RR: Have you attended any driving school?
BP: Evolution Performance Driving School, all three phases.  What the school teaches, simply works.

RR: Describe your driving style.
BP: Smooth aggressiveness.

RR: What was your first –and favorite autocross car?
BP: First was a Volkswagen Golf; favorite was a 1993 C Street Prepared Mazda Miata.

RR: If you could change one Solo rule – either for your specific class or in general — what would it be?
BP: I suppose the dated and now peculiar front sway bar allowance in stock, either allow front and rear bars, or allow nothing.

RR: Who would you like to thank for your success?
BP: My understanding wife and my great co-driver Jay Balducci.  Also thanks to all my friends and supporters from the Arizona and Arizona Border SCCA Regions!
